Carroll Cabin Barrens State Natural Area

Carroll Cabin Barrens State Natural Area

Decaturville, TN 38329 | (615)532-0436

Carroll Cabin Barrens is a 250-acre natural area located near the Tennessee River in Decatur County. It was previously owned by Weyerhaeuser Company and was designated as a natural area in 2002. The State received the property from Weyerhaeuser as a donation. Carroll Cabin Barrens is a series of dramatic Silurian aged limestone glades and barrens. The glades and barrens are well developed and occur in longitudinal bands on the hillsides above the Tennessee River. Little bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium) dominates the open, gravelly portions of the glades as well as the margins. Forbs, unique to the glades and barrens complex, grow sporadically in open glades and congregate around the barren periphery. The surrounding woods are a mixture of hardwoods of varied ages with the edges of the glades dominated by stunted eastern red cedars (Juniperus virginiana). The most common forest is an oak-hickory with short leaf (Pinus echinata) and Virginia pine (Pinus virginiana).

Rivertime Players

Rivertime Players

P.O. Box 128 | Parsons, TN 38363 | (731)847-6358

The Rivertime Players are a group of volunteers in Parsons, TN who strive to provide a community-based performing arts organization for the purpose of presenting dramatic and musical theatre; presenting quality family entertainment; creating opportunities for children and adults to develop talents in all aspects of theatre arts; and fostering,  promoting, and increasing the public knowledge and appreciation of the performing arts.

The Rivertime Players were formed when Dr. Dawn Larsen donated to the Parsons Arts Council the last remaining repertory tent show in November 2006. The Rivertime Players are now caretakers of a historic cultural asset that can trace its roots to its founding 116 years ago.

The Toby Show is produced in September and October annually.

Other productions are staged as time and space allow. At this time we do not post a season. We hope to do so when a permanent space becomes available.

Central to our mission is preserving and continuing the repertory tent theatre experience.

CLICK HERE to visit the Rivertime Players website for more information.

World’s Largest Coon Hunt

World’s Largest Raccoon Hunt

1925 Highway 641 South |Parsons, TN 38363 | (731)847-2404
Since 1976, the Decatur County World’s Largest Raccoon Hunt – Benefit for St. Jude has been held annually on the second full weekend of April, Thursday through Sunday. To this day, it is still worked solely by volunteers. It takes each and every person who walks on the grounds to make this great event possible.Over 2.3 million dollars has been donated to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital from this event in twenty-five years, with sixteen of those years being record breakers. Little did those first volunteers realize what a great task they had started! From 1976 to present, faces may have changed from time to time. However, all hearts remain the same and the motto is as it was twenty five years ago: “That every child at St. Jude Children Research Hospital be given the chance we all take for granted every day – The Chance For Life.”
